Exciting variety in customer barrels

News from Master Distiller Mario Rudolf - 12 August 2020

In this article, our Master Distiller gives us an interesting insight into the great variety of St. Kilian customer casks - the so-called ".Private Casks" .

Soon full throttle again in the distillery!

Soon we will be back at full throttle. After the forced break due to Corona, we will open our doors to visitors again in September 2020. After the summer break, production will also resume at its usual pace.

We are currently restocking our treasure trove in the World Whisky Lounge. There you can taste our 30l customer casks before you decide on a cask type and a recipe. We have everything ready for you to taste - whether mild or smoky in 7 cask types each. A truly exciting variety!

Enclosed are a few pictures of the selection of the corresponding tasting barrels in our customer barrel warehouse. The selection is a special experience for the team every time!

The choice is wide for the Private Casks

The barrels are stored in heavy-duty racks specially designed for this purpose. We have a small barrel stacker to safely place or remove the barrels from the upper rows as well.

Maturation in a 30l barrel is much faster than in larger barrels. Compared to an American Standard Barrel with 190l by about 3.5 times!

Faster maturation due to small barrels

This is due to the changed ratio of surface area to volume. The smaller the cask, the more surface area compared to volume, the faster the maturation and the higher the Angels Share. With more surface area, you also have more wood character than with a large barrel. Strong maturation within a very short time. A great result after only 3 years of maturation is the result.

In the pictures you can see the unbelievable colour of ex-port wine casks, for example, after only a few months in these "turbo casks". An absolute dream that makes the heart of every whisky connoisseur beat faster! The switch from the new make character to the whisky character also happens very soon and is remarkable.

The only important thing is not to "over-age" the barrels. Three to possibly four or five years are optimal. In the case of a second occupancy, it may well be a few years more.

We look forward to your visit, which will be possible again from September 2020, and to your interest in such barrels! We are always happy to come up with new barrel types for you.
