Press release: Franconia PUR - the third Kiliani edition BURKARD

Kiliani edition Burkard

Franken PUR: With BIO barley from the Odenwald and barrels from a Bürgstadt winery made from Spessart oak, St. Kilian Distillers celebrated this year's name day of the patron saint of Franconia

Würzburg's first bishop Burkard is the godfather of the third part of the St. Kilian-Franconia saga and thus for the probably most Franconian single malt whiskey of the Rüdenau distillery.

Rüdenau, July 2023

In honor of St. Kilian, the Franconian distillery St. Kilian presents a new limited Kiliani edition every year. To commemorate the missionary and itinerant preacher on July 8, the most Franconian single malt whiskey to date is released this year by St. Kilian Distillers.
The use of local organic barley and regional Pinot Noir barrels made from Spessart oak, as well as the title of the new bottling, show the strong connection of the whiskey distillery to its Franconian homeland and to its namesake St. Kilian.
The Kiliani editions are named after important personalities from the life of the patron saint. After the Franconian Duke GOSBERT and his wife GAILANA, the third Kiliani bottling pays tribute to Würzburg's first bishop BURKARD. According to tradition, Würzburg's city patron BURKARD had the bones of St. Kilian transferred to St. Mary's Church and on July 8, 752, elevated the Irish monk Kilian and his companions Kolonat and Totnan to diocesan saints.

Kiliani Edition 2023 - BURKARD

Under the direction of Master Distiller Mario Rudolf, a unique single malt whiskey was created with the Kiliani bottling BURKARD, which perfectly captures the flavors of the Franconian region. The inspiration for this was provided by hand-selected Pinot Noir barrels made of Franconian oak. In these wine barrels, the single malt whiskey, made from 100% pure organic barley malt from the region and double distilled in original Scottish pot stills, matured for three years.

"The use of local barley from Reichartshausen in the Bavarian Odenwald - our home malt, the cask made from Speassa oak, and its pre-coating with first-class red wine from neighboring Bürgstadt underline the Franconian reference of the Kiliani Edition 2023 to a very special degree," Rudolf is pleased to say. "More homeland and regionality in whisky is not possible," he adds.

Accordingly, the new Kiliani-Edition Burkard combines the naturalness of the regional barley malt with the finesse of the finest Pinot Noir wines from Franconia. With the power of the Spessart oak developed a unique single malt whiskey of characteristic aromatics and impressive depth. Rounded off by sweet vanilla and red grapes, the matured distillate exudes a fruity bouquet of ripe peaches and juicy apricots. Paired with warming spices, subtle oak notes and fine tannins, the result is a harmonious yet exceptional flavor profile. The single malt whisky is not cold-filtered and bottled with natural color at an optimal drinking strength of 46% vol. in the iconic 0.5-liter pot-still bottle.
Limited to 1,648 bottles, the fruity and creamy Kiliani Edition 2023 - BURKARD is already available for order online at St. Kilian as well as from mid-July at the Visitor Distillery in Rüdenau. The recommended retail price for the 0.5 liter bottle is € 59.90.
