Grave Digger

This single malt whisky is a true masterpiece of the art of distillation that carries the dark soul of Grave Digger’s metal universe. Distilled from Scottish peat-smoked malt at an intense 80 ppm, the heavy metal bottling impresses with a strong smoky note and a profound complexity of flavour. The four-year maturation in fine Tempranillo red wine casks from the Spanish region of Ribera del Duero gives it a multi-layered flavour of fruit, malty nuances, earthy accents and spicy oak with a hint of tannins.

The homage to Scottish history and the sounds of the Piper finds a smoky successor to the successful Tunes of War bottling in our Heavy Metal Edition ‘Grave Digger – Fields of Blood’. With flavours of mild peat smoke, red berries, ripe peaches and sweet grapes, this single malt whisky is an absolute highlight, and not just for heavy metal fans.

Master distiller Mario Rudolf and guitarist Axel “Ironfinger” Ritt have created a highly flavoured forest fruit liqueur based on the “heavily peated” new make spirit from St. Kilian. This peated liqueur was bottled at a strong 40 % vol and impresses with a perfectly balanced blend of fruity wild berries and fine peat smoke.

To celebrate the 45th anniversary of the metal legend Grave Digger, we are turning up the volume. This powerful single malt was distilled from heavily peated barley malt and matured in an intense ex Chianti red wine cask from Italy – a wild, untamed composition full of character. Aromatic, sweet peat smoke meets an opulent fruit flavour of ripe grapes, juicy cherries and peaches. The ensemble is supported by fine vanilla, elegant oak spice and a subtle touch of ash. A whisky like a roaring guitar on full blast: loud, complex, uncompromising.

This earth barrel maturation pays homage to the dark, mystical side of metal. After two years of maturation in fresh Palatinate oak barrels, this smoky, peaty creation matured for another two years in small 30-litre barrels, including ex-rum, ex-bourbon and fresh Palatinate oak barrels, underground in the Odenwald. The result is a single malt whisky of incomparable depth, characterised by fruity, spicy and earthy aromas as well as dark peat smoke, bringing the essence of the Odenwald directly into the glass.

This heavy metal bottling comes from deep within the earth of the majestic Odenwald forest. After initially maturing for two years in fresh Palatinate oak casks, the smoky whisky spent the second half of its time underground in 30-litre Oloroso sherry, Amarone red wine, Ruby port and American white oak casks. Look forward to a mystical essence of dark smoke, incomparable depth and a subtly earthy, spicy flavour.

The first Heavy Metal Edition from St. Kilian Distillers pays tribute to the band Grave Digger, founded in 1980. With 21 studio albums to their name, they continue to thrill fans around the world. The three albums ‘Tunes of War’, ‘The Clans Will Rise Again’ and ‘Fields of Blood’ are a homage to Scottish history and the sounds of the pipers. These legendary albums also formed the basis for our new Heavy Metal series.

For the second, strictly limited ‘Metal Turf Beast’ edition, ultra heavily peated barley malt with 91 ppm was used, which was also delivered directly from the Scottish Highlands. This single malt whisky, which was matured in 30-litre ex-port and ex-oloroso sherry casks and bottled in a total of 870 bottles, is one of the world’s smokiest whiskies. The bottling was in huge demand among fans and sold out completely within minutes of going on sale.
