Rüdenau Distillery presents new series "Whisky Solera by St. Kilian" and earth-aged Grave Digger Single Malt Whisky
St. Kilian Distillers, Germany's most experimental whisky distillery, is proud to announce an extraordinary online tasting experience. On November 4, 2023, at 7:00 PM, Master Distiller Mario Rudolf, whisky connoisseur Dr. Heinz Weinberger, and St. Kilian Brand Ambassador Christoph Albietz will unveil five exciting new products live from the stillhouse in Rüdenau, Lower Franconia.
The absolute highlight of the second online tasting of the year marks the launch of the "Whisky Solera by St. Kilian" series. By applying the cascading maturation process for sherry and brandy to single malt whisky, the distillery from Rüdenau once again sets new standards for quality and taste, elevating whisky enjoyment to a whole new level.
"Our enthusiasm for sherry casks, Spanish bodegas, and the Solera system was sparked by our first trip to Andalusia in 2019. The idea quickly matured to adapt the sophisticated and complex Solera system, which stands for maturity, age, and consistent quality in sherry and brandy, to whisky," recalls Master Blender Mario Rudolf. "Now we are very proud to have installed a whisky Solera here at St. Kilian, which is probably unique in the world in this form. We are very much looking forward to the abundance of aromas that this complex maturation system will reveal over the years."
Furthermore, St. Kilian will present a new, earth-aged Heavy Metal special bottling in cooperation with the band Grave Digger, an exclusive Ambassador's Choice from two former Laphroaig casks, and a Handfilled from an ex-cider cask from Kelterei Kuhn. As a sweet finish, the tasting participants can also look forward to the new edition of the St. Kilian MARZIPAN CREAM - cream liqueur. Until October 29, 2023, lovers of fine spirits can conveniently order the tasting sets with the five new products and three additional samples online or purchase them directly in the visitor distillery's shop.

Whisky Solera by St. Kilian – Peated (limited to 620 bottles): The first bottling of the new "Whisky Solera by St. Kilian" series is sure to attract the attention of whisky enthusiasts. This peated single malt whisky went through the three stages of the St. Kilian Solera system, where the final maturation stage consists exclusively of Pedro Ximénez sherry casks. The first tier of casks is made up of a blend of 20-year-old Amontillado and 30-year-old Fino sherry casks, while the second tier consists of the finest Oloroso sherry casks, which are filled with peated whisky matured in ex-bourbon casks. The perfect combination of tradition and innovation makes this limited special edition a very special taste experience.

Warming peat smoke, interwoven with dark, sherry-soaked fruits, plums and baked apples, harmonizes with fine herbs, a hint of walnut and dry ash notes in the complex overall picture.
Taste
The intense sweetness of sherry, plums, raisins and brown sugar harmonizes perfectly with the simultaneously warming melange of oak spice, herbs, dry ash notes and green walnuts, all enveloped by fine, spicy peat smoke.
Finish
The aromas of green walnuts, dry ash and warming oak spice linger pleasantly long with creamy fruit notes, herbs and fine dark chocolate.

Grave Digger – Exhumation – Earth Aging (limited to 460 bottles): After an initial two years of aging in fresh Palatinate oak casks in the Bunker City warehouses, the peated whisky was allowed to mature for the second half of its time underground amidst the majestic Odenwald forest. Small, 30-liter Oloroso sherry, Amarone red wine, Ruby port wine, and American white oak casks were used for this. The result is a mystical essence of dark smoke, incomparable depth, and complex, subtly earthy-spicy taste.

Sweet peat smoke envelops fruity aromas of red grapes, apples and apricots, accompanied by vanilla, ash and subtle earthy notes, rounded off by spicy oak with fresh mint and menthol.
Taste
The sweet explosion of flavors from crisp apples, red grapes and vanilla cream with a simultaneously warming melange of spicy oak, fine ash, subtle earthy tones and malty herbal candies is enveloped by delicate peat smoke.
Finish
The creamy sweet fruit notes are replaced by dry dark chocolate, spicy herbs, and subtly earthy and ash tones, which linger long with a hint of peat smoke.

Ambassador's Choice with Gavin Ryan Thomson (limited to 620 bottles): This smoky bottling is the result of a successful collaboration with St. Kilian Honorary Brand Ambassador Gavin Ryan Thomson. Together with Master Blender Mario Rudolf, he selected two former 190-liter ex-Bourbon casks from the Islay Distillery Laphroaig. These special casks had previously been used for the "Spirit of St. Kilian Batch 4" bottling. After re-filling with smoky new make, the distillate was allowed to mature for five years in the warehouses in the Odenwald.

Taste
The intensely powerful melange of fruity apricots, sweet vanilla cream and fine toffee, accompanied by peat smoke and a warming, peppery spice, is refined with dry ash notes and a hint of allspice.
Finish
Creamy vanilla and dry ash notes linger long with fine, spicy oak, allspice and subtle herbal tones, enveloped in delicate peat smoke.

Handfilled Whisky – ex Apple Wine Cask (limited to 310 bottles): This mild four-year-old single malt whisky matured in a former Jack Daniel's cask that had previously held apple wine from Kelterei Kuhn for 462 days. Inspired by the local apple wine culture, this limited bottling guarantees a refreshingly zesty taste experience with its captivating aroma and intense fruity sweetness of ripe apples.
