Scottish organic barley
News from Master Distiller Mario Rudolf - 03 June 2020
At the beginning of June, St. Kilian Master Distiller Mario Rudolf personally undertook a "field check" of our Scottish barley. The variety "Laureate" at the organic barley farmer Andreas Henn in Reichertshausen / Amorbach is growing splendidly!
"The grain looks great!"
Only a few kilometres as the crow flies from the St. Kilian distillery, barley grows according to organic farming methods. On the one hand, the "Planet" malting barley variety can be found there. Last year, St. Kilian was able to achieve sensational results with it in grain - and ultimately also in spirit.
Why a barley variety from Scotland?
On the other hand, the Scottish whisky barley variety "Laureate" is cultivated there. In the coming years, this will replace the "Concerto" barley variety, which has been predominantly cultivated in Scotland to date. The cultivation in Amorbach is probably the first cultivation outside Great Britain. According to Mario Rudolf, the experiment is going very well so far.
A lot of know-how in St. Kilian raw material selection
Our Naturland barley farmer Andreas Henn does great work with an infinite amount of intuition and know-how for soil and plants. So we always have great conversations with a real man of conviction. This is what the farmer and St. Kilian have in common: a love of nature and great commitment to what they do!
After harvesting, the barley is malting at the Weyermann malt house before St. Kilian Distillers can produce spirit and finally whisky.
